| Coldplay Coldplay - fronted by Chris Martin - found critical acclaim for the single `Yellow released in 2000. To date Coldplay have had five UK Top 10 hits and in 2005 the `Speed of Sound went to No.1 in the UK download chart. The band are also often associated with various social and political causes.

| Linkin Park Linkin Park formed in 1996 in California and they have been credited with adapting the nu metal genre to a popular style. Two Grammy Awards and a number of top ten hits established them as a series rock group with a loyal following. They are also known for several collaborations including work with rapper Jay-Z.

Their first album `Kasabian reached No.4 in the UK album charts in 2004 and this was bettered in 2006 when the album `Empire reached No.1. Kasabian are known for their self-confidence, swagger and jaunty vocal style.

| Keane Keane are well-known for the central use of the piano rather than guitar in their music. The distorted piano sound and use of synthesizers is a common feature of their music. Their first two albums, `Hopes and Fears and `Under the Iron Sea both went to No1 in the UK album chart.

| Oasis Oasis, led by Liam and Noel Gallagher were at the forefront of the Manchester music scene in the early 90s and became leading lights in the Britpop movement of the mid-90s. Albums such as Definitely Maybe and (Whats the Story) Morning Glory? made them one of the most popular bands during that period.

| The Smiths/Morrissey The Smiths were formed in 1982, based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Johnny Marr. They are considered by some critics to be the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British indie scene of the 1980s and have had a major influence on subsequent alternative music, including the Britpop movement. The Smiths won a growing following both at home and overseas until they split in 1987. However they remain cult and commercial favourites to this day, with Morrissey continuing as a solo artist.

| Nirvana Nirvana were famously fronted by Kurt Cobain came to be seen as the foremost grunge rock band. Cobain was labelled `a spokesman for generation x and hits like `Smells Like Teen Spirit' propelled Nirvana to centre stage of American rock. Kurt Cobain music career was tragicallly cut short when he died in 1994 and with him went much of Nirvana's drive.

| Radiohead Radiohead were formed in 1986 and the bands line-up has not changed. Their first release, `Creep in 1982 was initially unsuccessful. However, re-issued a year later it became a worldwide hit. The bands popularity in the UK increased with the success of their second album `The Bends. `Kid A and `Amnesiac also proved very successful even though they represented a change in the bands musical style.

| Snow Patrol Snow Patrol were originally formed in 1994 but did not achieve commercial succes until the relase of their album 'Final Straw' in 2003. Originally formed as an indie rock band, Snow Patrol has sought a more alternative rock and powerpop sound in recent years on the heels of mainstream success with the songs "Run", "Chasing Cars" and more recently, "Signal Fire" from the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack.

| Travis Travis has twice been awarded British album of the year at the annual BRIT Awards, and is often credited with having paved the way for bands such as Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol. They have released five studio albums, beginning with their debut, Good Feeling, in 1997. Their fifth album, The Boy with No Name, was released on 7 May 2007.
