| Blondie Blondie gained fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The band was a pioneer of the punk and new wave scenes and was considered an underground band until the release of the single `Denis which reached No.2 in the UK. The album `Parallel Lines produced three UK top ten hits including `Heart of Glass their first UK No.1.

| The Clash Punk legends The Clash formed in 1976 and continued until 1986. They were part of the original wave of UK punk rock in the late 1970s. The band went on to incorporate punk with reggae, rockabilly, dance, jazz, ska, and other styles. The Clash's attitude and style, as much as their music, has gone on to influence many other bands.

| The Cure The Cure was one of the leading bands within the British gothic/punk scene of the early 1980s. The band frontman Robert Smith set the tone with his wild looks, uneven make-up and exotic stage performances. The band is considered by many to be archetypal underground musicians, though they have had chart success, when `Wish reached No.1 in the UK album charts in 1992.

| The Stranglers The Stranglers got their music break as a support act role on the Ramones first British tour in 1976. Although The Stranglers were associated with punk/new wave, their idiosyncratic approach never quite fitted with any musical genre. Their first singles hit was `Peaches which reached No.8 in 1977. In the same year they had two other top ten hits: `No More Heroes and `Something Better Change. Their most successful single was `Golden Brown which reached No.2 in 1982. In 1990 Hugh Cornwell left the band to pursue a solo career. The band continues to perform to this day.

| The Jam/Paul Weller The Jam had four UK No.1 hits in the period 1977 to 1982. The band were led by Paul Weller who wrote most of the lyrics and music and went on to form the Style Council and to have a successful solo career. Their first No.1, `Going Underground was released in 1980 and like many of their songs contained commentary on social issues of the day.

| The Police/Sting The Police were one of the first mainstream white bands to adapt reggae into their music. Their breakthrough came with the success of `Roxanne which reached No.12 in the UK charts in 1979. This was quickly followed by more success as a re-released version of `Cant Stand Losing You reached No.2 before `Message in a Bottle became their first No.1 hit. Eight more top ten hits followed in the next four years. The Police Reunion Tour of 2007 has sold out across all venues, highlighting their continued popularity.

| The Ramones The Ramones have often been called the first American punk band. Though they never achieved great commercial success, their underground band status gave them a loyal following. The bands most successful hit in the UK was `Baby I Love You which reached No. 8 in 1980. The band disbanded in 1996 after more than 20 years. Sadly all three founding members Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone died within eight years following the break-up.

| The Sex Pistols The Sex Pistols Formed in London in 1975 and were an aggressive response to the progressive rock and manufactured pop of the mid-70s. Their ability to provoke outrage captivated Britain but often disrupted their music - gigs were often banned or ended in near riots. John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) left the band in 1978 amid a turbulent US tour and the group disbanded some months later, although the band re-formed in 1996 for the Filthy Lucre tour and have toured on occasion ever since.

| Siouxsie and the Banshees Siouxsie and the Banshees were formed in 1976, led by the singer Siouxsie Sioux (who became a punk icon) and the bassist Steven Severin, the band's only constant members. The Banshees formed at the advent of the British punk scene and soon became one of the major bands in the post-punk movement. Their music influenced a large range of very diverse bands over the years. The group released a total of eleven studio albums from 1978 to 1995.
