| Chet Baker Chet Baker became an icon of the `West Coast Jazz scene. His major breakthrough came when he was chosen to play with Charlie Parker in 1951. In 1952 he joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and had an instant hit with `My Funny Valentine. In later years drug abuse affected his playing career and restricted performances.

Titled `Dangerously in Love, it was released to critical acclaim and it produced two best selling singles: `Crazy in Love and `Baby Boy. Her second album was equally successful. | James Brown James Brown was commonly referred to as `The Godfather of Soul. Brown started his career in 1953 and rose to fame in the 1960s on the strength of his superb live performances. He was active in civil and social politics in the USA and did much to support African-American rights. For many soul and hip-hop artists, his music was the source of much influence.

| John Coltrane John Coltrane is credited with reshaping modern jazz and being the influence for later saxophonists such as Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. He has played with many of the greats of jazz, including Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. His most famous work is `Love Supreme, released in 1964 and considered still, one of the premier works of modern jazz.

| Miles Davis Miles Davis is widely considered to be one of the most influential black musicians of the 20th century. Davis was at the forefront of almost all developments in jazz from the 1950s to his death in 1991, an influence that spilled over into every other African American music genres. His greatest work included albums such as `Birth of Cool, `Kind of Blue and `Sketches of Spain.

| Isaac Hayes Isaac Hayes is best known for the film score for the 1971 movie `Shaft and for his creative influence at Stax Records. Outside of music Hayes became well-known as the voice of the `Chef in the TV comedy hit series `South Park. A song from the series performed by Chef called `Chocolate Salty Balls reached No.1 in the UK singles chart in 1999.

His album 'Thriller' became the best-selling album of all time, and his spectacular videos established him as the first black entertainer to amass a strong following on MTV. | Bob Marley Bob Marley is an iconic symbol of Jamaican Reggae and the Rastafarian movement. Bob Marley raised the profile of reggae music and brought chart success to the genre, with hits like `No Woman No Cry! and `Could You Be Loved. His posthumous compilation album `Legend is the best-selling reggae record ever. Bob Marley died suddenly in 1981 aged 36 and as a mark of his status, received a state funeral in Jamaica.
